Pain Management
Policy and Practice: A
Balanced Approach
September 5 &
6, 2008
We are very pleased that the Montana
Pain Initiative’s Second Annual Conference “Pain
Management Policy and Practice:
A Balanced Approach” brought pain to the forefront
in
Montana
. The success
can be directly attributed to strong planning, strategic
media coverage, quality local and national speakers, and
timeliness of the topics addressed.
We attracted 203 participants mostly
from
Montana
(one Doctor of Naturopathy from
Sidney
,
MT
drove almost 600 miles to attend), but also from
California
,
Kansas
,
North Dakota
, and
Washington
. The diversity of stakeholders (both in discipline
and geography) made for an invigorating environment with
stimulating discussions.
We are in the process of tabulating pre and post
tests and will get that information to you when we have it
analyzed. Our
initial view of the evaluations indicates that the
participants were pleased with the speakers and the content.
Conference speakers presented the
epidemiology and physiology of pain, the "ideal
world" of pain management, multiple components of best
practices in pain management, access to these best
practices, responsible opioid prescribing, and the
challenges of opioid diversion and addiction and possible
solutions.
We highly recommend all four of our
national speakers: Scott Fishman, MD; June Dahl, PhD;
Nathan Rudin, MD; Adam Wolf, ALCU Attorney.
Our current Attorney General, Mike McGrath spoke and
both of our candidates for Attorney General attended.
The speakers were excellent and the
audience was interactive and enthusiastic about the
diversity of information they were provided.
The conference was approved for 13.75 AMA PRA Category 1 CME Creditstm, Nursing Continuing
Education Credit, Social Work Credit, and 10 Law Enforcement
Post Credits.
